My hero

I don't know what I would do without this girl. She never ceases to impress me. When ever I need someone to motivate me and make me laugh I just have to call Janelle. You know how you call your mom every five minutes when you move out of the house with random questions like, how do I make spaghetti? how do I go to the doctor by myself? etc. etc.. Well I still call my mom but I am finding that I am calling my little sister with life questions just about as much. Yesterday the poor girl had to interrupt watching Lost about seventeen times while I called to ask her step by step questions while attempting to make Pavlova, something that she made with such ease. She is the greatest amateur chef I know. She is brilliant, she got into nursing school on her first try with a scholarship! Who does that? She loves life even though she has 1 million health problems (thats a lie, she is perfect) "but at least your not a ... 'small person'", right nell?

Everyone needs someone like her to look up to. If you don't, I can give you her number.

p.s. - Janelle the Pavlova tasted perfect. Yours looked prettier but I'm over it.
I sure love you!

Mom your gonna be so proud

Juje and I cannot believe our eyes. We had very little faith anything in our garden would grow but mother nature has done it again. We already have three tomatoes the size of grapes on one of our plants. I can't believe it.

Summer has been great so far. This past weekend we had a nice little camping adventure in a gopher sanctuary up by Tony's Grove. We had to mold our bodies to their tunnels to get even a wink of sleep. We discovered our new friend Chris who happens to be the best handyman in America. Sand Volleyball is growing on us gnomes like its nobody's business. I never thought I would be able to say that. Our 10k and 1/2 marathon is coming up soon and I actually think I'm excited for it.

This summer is blowing my mind

To be free

Arlington Cemetary

Sometimes we don't realize what sacrifice is until we see places like these. I'm so grateful to have been able to visit a few of these humbling sites. The three pictures on bottom are from Normandy. Janelle and I looked forever to find relics. People say they still find metal in the sand from the invasion of Normandy. We weren't that lucky.

For everyone that has given their lives... I am grateful.

Riding to Paradise

Juje and I did it. We rode to Paradise and it was just as good as it sounds. It is the most beautiful bike ride. Rolling green hills along with snow topped mountains in the background. I really felt like I was in Salzburg. It was wonderful. Our bikes loved the pavement and the dirt. Our faces didn't love being the bug guards but we got over it.

Ah... the woods

I am a big fan of the mountains, woods, wilderness, what have you. I even just bought my own tent so I can venture out and make a home there whenever I want (even though I don't like going alone). I recently finished reading a book called the Black Grizzly of Whiskey Creek. I really liked it. It's one of those books that you don't realize you like till you've finished it. It was way dry at parts and delightfully gruesome at parts but in the end it made my respect for nature grow like crazy. Midway through reading it I was scared I would never be able to sleep in the mountains without being afraid. By the end of it I realized that the wild is the wild. You can't expect it to cater to you and that is why I love it. You are in someone else's territory. You play by their rules, unless you have a gun I guess.

In this book you follow a black grizzly through the national park in Banff Canada. As it's food supply is cut off due to Mount St. Helens ash killing the berry patches and grazing areas, and careless campers and nearby restaurants not disposing of their waste properly, bears are drawn to garbage bins for food. (this was in the eighties before bear-proof bins came to be) Needless to say people got hurt. The author tells the story from the point of view of the bear as well as the victim and hunters. As my friends know my motto is "humans come first" but I found myself routing for the bear in this story. You probably have to read it to understand.

I'm glad people use their heads a little more now. At least I hope they do. I hope people can respect the wild and enjoy it at the same time.

At the end of the book when they have finally put the bear down the author writes, "We had made this lord of bears seek out the most inaccessible hiding places: when great emotions stirred in him to roar out defiance, our presence had caused him to retreat into silence. We had roused him to fury, but we could never make him lower his head in homage to our overwhelming weapons, or confine his spirit with our instruments of science. In the end, he had escaped: he had eluded our determination to understand and explain him."

This bear had outwitted the park rangers for weeks. I love how he made himself elusive to them, "he could smell their metal" it said. His attacks were on people that came between him and his food source that weren't armed. It's crazy how smart they are.

Fact: their sense of smell is 33 times sharper than a hound dog.
So... watch out.

Proud to be....

Day two in D.C. was double the pleasure. today I went to the center of engravings and beheld 32 million dollars with my own eyes. they sell sheets of printed money that you can cut yourself and I wanted to buy a sheet but when janelle and I went to the counter to purchase them we were appauled to find out that to buy 4 uncut $1 bills was gonna cost me $15.50! What the %*#! Janelle put it best when she asked the man "So I am paying you to do your job!?" The man was not happy to hear that and just stared at us without an answer. It was great.
You gnomes are going to be sad to hear that you are missing out on me buy so many regrettable things. Get excited to see them when I get home.

After the money place we went to the Smithsonian of Natural history where I saw crazy animals and the hope diamond which is like a million carats or something. It was cool.

On our way to the metro we were stopped because the road was blocked off. To our surprise it was our second Obama siteing! i didn't see his face clear but I saw Bidens. It was cool to see his entourage and to see the flag on his sweet ride.

After that we got to see the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution and The Bill of Rights. It almost brought a tear to my eye. I was so proud to be an American. Well, I still am. I was so happy to see George Washingtons real life signature. I loved it. My heart has been burning ever since.

We did so many other things but I am tired of writing. My mom and her dang itinerary are wearing my feet out. But its great. Me and the siblings wanted to buy her flowers for mothers day so we snuck out of this rad chinese restaurant early to buy some on the street and have them back at the room before she got there. We managed to get them and run down to get on the metro thinking we would make it before they got there but we spotted them a ways behind us! We sprinted through the station with the flowers behind my back while holding a giant umbrella and a bunch of weirdo purchases from the day. It was quite the sight. anyways, she loved them.

Can't wait to see what happens tomorrow
